The American artist Suzanne Pastor, who has lived in Prague since 1990, shows new works at the beautiful Nostress Gallery at v Kolkovne 9 in Prague.

Curated by Dr. Helena Staub, the exhibition features glass books, including a very large broken book illuminated on the floor from within, and a new floor installation triptych titled "Ophelia" depicting the artist's face and hands in a three-windowed enclosure, submerged under a glass and cemented wooden panel. Other works are large-format color pigments on linen, hands and hair in various abstract or surreal proportions, and photo objects involving computer parts and transparencies or text-foto combinations.

The artist states, "the new work is a new examination of what photography is, and what it is not. They are not really photographs, in that in most of these works, no camera was involved. They are not really paintings either, although the linen substrate and pigment colors hint that they could be related."

Often the hands are not hands but fragments hinting at extraterrestial beings, or a thumb masquerading as a shoulder. The legitimate photographs in this exhibition, a group of four black and white photographs, are fixed /accented with tiny nails supporting tiny metal frames which in themselves form additional individual photographs within the photograph. The artist emphasizes the photograph as object and, as in her work of previous decades, deals with breaking the barriers of perception and the limitations of the medium itself.

Americká umělkyně Suzanne Pastor, žijící v Praze od roku 1990, představuje svá nová díla v krásných prostorách galerie Nostress (V Kolkovně 9, Praha 1).

Výstava, jejíž kurátorkou je Dr. Helena Staub, zahrnuje skleněné knihy, včetně velké rozbité knihy, osvícené zespodu zevnitř, a také nový triptych, pojmenovaný „Ophelia“, zobrazující autorčinu tvář a dlaně na trojdílné instalaci, zapuštěné v podlaze v panelu ze skla, dřeva a betonu. Mezi dalšími díly jsou velkoformátová barevná plátna, ruce a vlasy v různých abstraktních a surreálních proporcích a fotografie zobrazující například elektronické součástky, fotografie na průhledné fólii nebo v kombinaci s textem.

Autorka říká: „Nová díla se snaží zkoumat to, co fotografie je, i to, co není. Nejsou to doopravdy fotografie v tom smyslu, že k jejich vzniku většinou nebyl použit fotoaparát. Ale nejsou to ani malby, přestože plátno a pigmentové barvy napovídají, že díla mohou mít s malbami něco společného.“

Někdy ruce nejsou vůbec ruce, ale objekty odkazující na mimozemské bytosti, nebo je to třeba palec vydávající se za rameno. Skutečné fotografie v této výstavě, čtyři černobílé fotografie, jsou doplněny drobnými jehličkami podpírajícími malé kovové rámečky, které tak ohraničují jednotlivé malé obrázky uvnitř vlastní fotografie. Autorka zdůrazňuje fotografii jako objekt a stejně jako ve svých minulých dílech se vypořádává s bariérami lidského vnímání a s hranicemi média samotného.
